On July 4th this year the Alban Lacemakers were invited to take part in the Festival of St Albans Life. The idea is to give people an idea of what goes on in St Albans and the different groups and societies that go to give the towm its unique character.
Margaret Pankhurst was approached by the organisers to see if the Alban Lacemakers could mount a display and demonstrate in St Peter's Street. So Jennie Davies, Madeline Tomkinson, Mary Kenward and Pauline Hayton volunteered to take part.
The demonstration was supposed to start at 12 noon, but well before that, while we were still setting up people were gathering round to see the display.
It was a lovely summer's day, although a little windy and crowds of residents and visitors stopped to chat, watch us work and admire the display of lace. Many were interested in the "have-a-go pillow"; children of all ages, and the time passed very quickly.
Thanks to Keith Davies and Colin Dunkerly for the use of their photos
